How this is worked out

The rule

  • This finder performs no arithmetic. It is a three-level lookup: device class, then drive family, then size callout.
  • Every size entry carries its own tip dimension and its own near-miss list. Nothing is inherited from the device class or the drive family.
  • A size is only listed under a device class when that pairing is in the data. Absence from the list is not evidence that the pairing never occurs.

What it assumes

  • Sizes reflect common consumer hardware, not every revision a manufacturer has shipped.
  • Metric tip dimensions are the nominal figure printed on bit packaging, not a measured value.

What it does not account for

  • Security variants of a drive that add a center pin are called out separately only where the data lists them.
  • Thread size, screw length and torque. This tool answers tip fit only.
  • Adhesive, clips and gaskets holding a case shut once the screws are out.
