Garage Opener Learn Button Colors and What They Mean

The color of the Learn button is the fastest way to place a garage door opener in a generation, and it is also the fastest way to get it wrong. Everything on this page about color, technology, frequency and year comes from the chart Chamberlain Group publishes in its own support documentation, cited below. Where that chart is silent, or where its edges blur, this page says so and tells you how to settle the question from the unit itself instead of guessing from a color.

Where the button is

Chamberlain Group documents the Learn button as being on the same side of the opener as the connections for the door control and the safety sensor wires. On many units that means looking up at the back or the side of the motor housing rather than at the front.

On some models the button sits behind the light lens, which has to come off to see it. On others it is beside a small LED that lights while the opener is in programming mode, and that LED has a documented color of its own.

If you are on a ladder with a phone, photograph the whole area including the wire terminals and the antenna wire rather than just the button. The surrounding detail is what lets you check a faded color against something else.

What the manufacturer documents

The table below reproduces the mapping Chamberlain Group publishes: button color, antenna wire color, security technology, radio frequency, and the years each entry covers. It is their chart, not an inference drawn here.

Two things in it surprise people. The first is that a white round button is the newest entry rather than the oldest; it is documented as Security+ 3.0 over Bluetooth from 2025. The second is that yellow covers two separate documented entries with different frequency wording, one running to 2022 and a Step Saver variant after that.

Read the frequency column carefully. The yellow entries name more than one frequency, which means the color alone does not pin down the radio your opener uses.

Reading the edges of the chart

The year ranges in the published chart do not tile neatly. Green runs to 1997 and red or orange starts at 1997. Purple runs 2005 to 2014 while yellow starts in 2011, so those two overlap by three years, and there is a gap between 2004 and 2005 where nothing is named.

That is not sloppiness on the manufacturer part; production overlaps and model lines change at different times. It does mean a unit built near any of those boundaries cannot be dated by color alone, and this site will not tell you which side of a boundary yours falls on.

When the color puts you in an overlap, the answer comes off the unit rather than out of a chart. The next section is how to get it.

When you cannot tell, here is how to settle it

Start with the label on the motor unit. It carries the opener model number and usually a manufacture date, and both are worth more than any color. Photograph it; the print is small and often dusty.

Check the antenna wire color against the chart. The published mapping gives an antenna color alongside each button color, so the two agree with each other when the button has faded but the wire has not.

Check the LED beside the button. The chart names an LED color for each entry, and green against amber is a much easier call than purple against brown.

Finally, the FCC ID. Every certified radio in the United States carries one, and the FCC equipment authorization database will return the grant for it. That tells you the frequency the device was certified on, from a federal record rather than from a color.

What the color does not tell you

The color places the opener in a generation. It does not tell you that any particular replacement remote is accepted by your unit. This site holds no manufacturer statement to that effect for any specific pairing, and it will not manufacture one.

It also says nothing about whether your opener has spare memory positions left, whether the receiver board still works, or whether a previous owner replaced the logic board with something from a different generation. All three are common and all three defeat a correct color match.

What the color is genuinely good for is narrowing the search and knowing which questions to ask. Take the generation to the listing text and check whether the listing names your opener model number. If it does not, you have learned nothing about compatibility, only about the listing.

Genie and other brands

The colored Learn button scheme belongs to the Chamberlain group of brands. Genie openers use a program or set button instead, and Genie documents a sequence in which the button is held until an LED changes color during programming rather than a color that identifies a generation.

So the absence of a colored button is not a fault or an unusual model. On a Genie unit it is the expected finding, and the identification route there is the model number on the powerhead and the Genie programming documentation for that model.

Other brands vary again. Where this site holds nothing about a brand, it says nothing about it.

Before you trust this

  • The number printed on your remote and the number on your opener motor unit are different things. A listing that names your old remote has said nothing at all about your opener, and buying against the wrong number is the most common way this goes wrong.
  • Learn button color fades. Purple reads as brown after years under a hot bulb, and red and orange are hard to separate on a sun-bleached unit. Confirm against the antenna wire color and the LED color before you rely on what you think you see.
  • The documented year ranges overlap and leave a gap between 2004 and 2005. A unit built near a boundary cannot be dated from its color alone, and this site will not guess which side of a boundary yours sits on.
  • This page states what the manufacturer documents about colors and generations. It does not state that any particular replacement is accepted by your opener, because no listing collected for this site is a manufacturer statement about your unit.
