The anchor aisle is organized by anchor. Your wall is not. Almost every failed fixing is a fastener that would have worked in a different wall, put into the one that happened to be there. This page sorts the question the other way round: identify what you are drilling into first, and the anchor follows from that.
Identify the wall before you buy anything
Drill a small pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot and look at what comes out. White powder that crumbles between your fingers is gypsum, so the wall is drywall. Gritty gray dust with hair or fiber in it is plaster. Hard gray dust and a bit that slows down is concrete. Red or brown dust is brick. Wood shavings mean you have found a stud, which is the outcome you want.
The sound test is quicker and less reliable. Hollow drywall gives a drum note; a stud gives a dull thud. Plaster over lath can sound solid everywhere and still be hollow behind, which is why the pilot hole beats the knuckle.
Older houses mix all of this in one room. A wall can be plaster on one side of a doorway and drywall on the other, and a garage often has bare block on one wall and framed drywall on the next.
When it can go into a stud, it should
A fixing into framing transfers load to the structure of the house. A fixing into hollow drywall transfers load to a sheet of gypsum held together by paper. There is no anchor that closes that gap, only anchors that narrow it.
Find studs with a magnet rather than an electronic finder if you have the choice. The magnet locates the drywall screws holding the sheet to the framing, which are unambiguously in the middle of a stud. An electronic finder reports a density change, which may be a stud, a pipe or a stack of wiring.
Once you have one stud, the next is usually 16 inches away, sometimes 24. Measure and confirm with the magnet rather than assuming, because garages and additions do not always follow the spacing used in the rest of the house.
Hollow wall anchors, in order of how much they hold
A plain screw driven into drywall with no anchor holds a picture frame and nothing else. This is not a caution about margins; it is a statement about the material. Gypsum has almost no pullout resistance and the paper facing tears.
Plastic expansion anchors are the weakest real option. They rely on the plug spreading against the back of the hole, and the hole is in gypsum, so the load path still ends in a material that crumbles.
Self-drilling threaded anchors bite over a wider area and hold meaningfully more. Toggle bolts hold the most of any hollow-wall option, because the toggle spreads load across a large area of the back face of the board rather than the edge of a hole.
All of them are still hollow-wall fixings. For a loaded shelf, the honest ordering is stud first, toggle second, and everything else for light duty.
Concrete, brick and block
Solid concrete takes a sleeve or wedge anchor and holds a great deal, provided the hole is drilled to the stated depth and cleaned out. Dust left in the hole is the usual reason a masonry anchor underperforms; it stops the anchor seating and it stops adhesive bonding.
Brick raises the question of where in the brick. A fixing in the face of a brick is stronger than one in the mortar joint, and manufacturers state which their figures apply to.
Hollow block is not solid masonry and should not be treated as it. A wedge anchor in the thin face shell of a block has very little material to expand against. Sleeve anchors designed for hollow base materials, or a toggle sized for block, are the right family there.
How to read a number on an anchor package
A stated capacity is a test result under stated conditions: a specified base material, a specified thickness, a specified hole size, usually a single steady pull in one direction. Read the conditions alongside the number, because the number without them means very little.
Your wall is not the test wall. Board thickness varies, the anchor may land near an edge or a previous hole, and installation is rarely as clean as a laboratory. A shelf also applies shear and pullout at the same time, which the single-direction figure does not describe.
Use rated figures for ranking anchors against each other rather than for deciding how much your wall will hold. Then leave a large margin, and prefer a stud.
Shelves and tall units specifically
A wall shelf loads its fixings in two directions at once. The weight pulls down in shear along the wall, and the leverage of the shelf depth pulls the top fixings straight out of the wall. Deeper shelves increase the second component sharply, which is why a deep shelf on light anchors fails at the top first.
An anti-tip strap on a standing unit is a different job again. It is not carrying the load; it is stopping the unit rotating forward. That strap should go into a stud, because the force it sees when it matters is sudden and large.
If the studs are not where you want the shelf, the answer is usually a horizontal cleat or a rail fixed into two or more studs, with the shelf mounted to that. Moving the load to framing beats finding a stronger anchor for the drywall.

Before you trust this
- A screw driven into drywall with no anchor holds a picture frame and nothing heavier. Drywall is gypsum faced with paper, the paper is what resists pullout, and paper tears. No technique changes this.
- Anchor ratings are test results under stated conditions, generally a single steady pull in a specified material at a specified thickness. A loaded shelf applies shear and pullout together in a wall that is not the test wall.
- A tall loaded unit needs its anti-tip fixing in a stud, not in hollow drywall. That fixing exists for a sudden load, and CPSC runs a national tip-over campaign because the failure lands on a person.
- Drilling into a wall means drilling into whatever is behind it. Wiring runs vertically near outlets and horizontally through studs, and plumbing runs wherever fixtures are. Treat any wall backing a kitchen or a bathroom as occupied until you have checked.
